Joseph E. Langlois, Acting Associate Director, Refugee, Asylum and International Operations

Background Experience/Significant Achievements:

On April 8, 2012, Joseph E. Langlois began serving as the new Deputy Associate Director for the Refugee, Asylum, and International Operations Directorate (RAIO).

 Langlois has spent more than 33 years working on asylum, refugee and immigration issues. He worked with the International Rescue Committee, the International Catholic Migration Commission, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees assisting refugees in Southeast Asia. In 1991, he joined the Immigration and Naturalization Service as an asylum officer at the San Francisco Asylum Office. He later became a supervisory asylum officer in San Francisco and the director of the Newark Asylum Office.

 In June 1997, Langlois was appointed as the first deputy director of the Asylum Division and later served for two years as its acting director. In Jan. 2001, he was appointed director of the Asylum Division and held this position until April 2012. Currently, Mr. Langlois is serving as RAIO's Acting Associate Director. 

 In 2008, Langlois was the recipient of the USCIS Director's Exceptional Service Award, the Securing America's Promise Award. This award is the highest and most prestigious award granted within USCIS for sustained overall contributions to USCIS and its mission. In 2009, he received the Presidential Rank Award, Distinguished Executive. This is considered the nation's highest civil service award given to outstanding leaders who consistently demonstrate strength, integrity, industry, and a relentless commitment to public service.

Education

 Langlois has been a member of the Senior Executive Service since January 2001. He is a graduate of Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service in Washington, D.C
