USCIS.gov is organized into topic areas that provide informational materials for all USCIS customers including those going through the naturalization process, individuals looking to bring family into the United States, families looking to adopt a child from abroad and more. 

Adoption

Adopting a child from another Country is often a complicated journey. We will define the process and provide information to help you make informed decisions for you and your family.

Green Card (Permanent Residence)

A permanent resident is someone who has been granted authorization to live and work in the United States on a permanent basis. As proof of that status, a person is granted a permanent resident card, commonly called a "green card." You can become a permanent resident several different ways.  The steps to become a permanent resident are different for each category and will depend on if you are currently living inside or outside the United States.

Humanitarian

USCIS provides a number of humanitarian programs and protection to assist individuals in need of shelter or aid from disasters, oppression, emergency medical issues and other urgent circumstances.

Citizenship 

Deciding to become a U.S. citizen is one of the most important decisions in an individual¿s life.  If you decide to apply to become a U.S. citizen, you will be showing your commitment to the United States and your loyalty to its Constitution.  The citizenship process is explained in this topic area.

Military 

This topic area site immigration information and links to resources geared specifically for members of the military and their families.   USCIS is continuously working with the Department of Defense to ensure the military community has accurate and up-to-date information about immigration services and benefits.

Family 

USCIS serves families with a wide range of immigration-related interests. This section of the website explains how you may petition for relatives to immigrate to (permanently live in) the United States.

Visit the US 

This topic area provides information on how to apply for a visa to visit the United States.  There are two types of nonimmigrant visas:

  • B-1 visa for individuals who wish to visit temporarily for business purposes, (e.g. conferences) or for medical treatment, or to accompany a family member who is requires medical treatment; and
  • B-2 visa is for individuals who wish to visit temporarily or to visit family or friends.

Working in the US

The United States welcomes thousands of foreign workers in multiple occupations or employment categories every year. All foreign workers must obtain permission to work legally in the United States.  Each employment category for admission has different requirements, conditions and authorized periods of stay that are explained in this section.

Genealogy 

The Genealogy Program is a fee-for-service program providing family historians and other researchers with timely access to historical immigration and naturalization records.
