USCIS ELIS Login Help

USCIS ELIS has strict user ID and password rules that all USCIS ELIS users must follow. Safeguarding personal information for everyone who uses our electronic immigration system is very important.

Password Requirements

Passwords are case sensitive and must be:

  • At least 8 characters in length and different from the password you use to access your personal email
  • Updated every 365 days because passwords expire 365 days after the date you initially created the password or last updated it in your USCIS ELIS account
  • If you are creating a new password, it must be different from the eight previous passwords you used to access the system
  •  A combination of alphabetic, numeric, and “special” characters.”  Special characters include “! @ $ % * ( ) < > ? : ; { } + - ~)”
  • No more than two identical and consecutive characters in any position from the previous password.  For example, if your previous password was “Myelisact4$” you cannot  use “My”, “el”, “is”, “4$” or any other combination of two consecutive or identical characters from your prior password

For password security, USCIS recommends that passwords should NOT:

  • Contain any dictionary word
  • Contain any proper noun or the name of any person, pet, child or fictional character or any information that could be readily guessed about the creator of the password
  • Contain the name of any employee serial number, Social Security number, birth date, phone number or any information that could be readily guessed about the creator of the password
  • Contain any simple pattern of letters or numbers, such as "qwerty" or "xyz123"
  • Be any word, noun or name spelled backwards
  • Don't use a password that contains personal information (name, birth date, etc.).
  • Contain keyboard patterns (asdf) or sequential numbers (1234)
  • Use all numbers, uppercase letters or lowercase letters.
  • Contain repeating characters (aa11)

Tips for keeping your password secure:

  • Never tell your password to anyone
  • Never write your password down
  • Never send your password by Email
  • Periodically test your current password and change it to a new one
