USCIS ELIS Login Help

USCIS ELIS has strict user ID and password rules that all users must follow. Safeguarding personal information for everyone who uses USCIS ELIS is very important to us.

Password Requirements

Passwords are case sensitive and MUST be:

  • At least 8 characters in length and different from the password you use to access your personal email;
  • A combination of alphabetic (upper- and lowercase), numeric and “special” characters (for example, ! @ $ % * ( ) < > ? : ; { } + - ~);
  • Changed every 365 days. Your password will expire 365 days after the date you initially created it or last changed it in your USCIS ELIS account; and
  • Different from the last 8 passwords you used to access USCIS ELIS. Your password cannot contain identical and consecutive characters in any position from the previous password.

For example, if your previous password was “Myelisact4$,” you cannot use “My,” “el,” “is,” “4$” or any other combination of consecutive characters from your prior password.

For security purposes, USCIS recommends that passwords NOT:

  • Contain personal information or any information that could be readily guessed about the user or any USCIS employee, such as name, serial number, birth date, social security number and telephone number;
  • Contain any proper noun or the name of any person, pet, child or fictional character;
  • Contain any dictionary words;
  • Be any word (including names) spelled backwards;
  • Contain any simple pattern of letters or numbers, such as “qwerty” or “xyz123”;
  • Contain keyboard patterns (“asdf”) or sequential numbers (“1234”);
  • Use all numbers, uppercase letters or lowercase letters; and
  • Contain repeating characters, such as “aa11.”

Tips for keeping your password secure:

  • Never tell your password to anyone;
  • Never write your password down;
  • Never send your password by email; and
  • Periodically test your current password and change it to a new one.
