Job Title: Contract Specialist
Location: Office of Contracting, Williston, Vermont
A Contract Specialist applies knowledge of acquisition regulations to complex situations. As a Contract Specialist, you will work with USCIS programs to develop, solicit, award and administer contracts for supplies and services.
How has working at USCIS helped you grow as a professional?
USCIS has helped me grow through mentoring opportunities. When I first started here, I worked with senior contracting professionals, and over the course of time I received formal and informal mentoring on a wide variety of acquisition-related topics. Many times the coaching dealt with actual situations. The program gave me the confidence to apply the knowledge I have gained as an acquisition professional. Now that I have been here a while, I am mentoring junior contract specialists, and it is a very rewarding experience.
How did you end up at USCIS from school at Johnson State College?
I was ready for a change in my career and I knew I had more to offer. The USCIS Office of Contracting offered me a more challenging opportunity. I quickly learned the process and progressively took on more and more responsibility. I was able to take advantage of the USCIS Tuition Assistance Program and I attained my college degree.
What is the work environment like?
I think we are an organization with a lot of diversity. USCIS Contracting has grown significantly over the last few years. Diversity has played an important part in our growth. I love the fact that we have so many new perspectives, ideas and different experiences to learn from.
What surprised you most about USCIS?
The organizational support for my growth and development is what surprised me the most about the USCIS Office of Contracting. This office is all about supporting and developing their people. They spend a lot of time helping us develop our potential. The knowledge and experience I have gained here has made me feel I could go anywhere and do anything.
