Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti Extended and Redesignated for 18 Months; Certain Employment Authorization Documents (EADs) Automatically Extended Through Aug. 3, 2025
Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas extended and redesignated Haiti for TPS for 18 months, from Aug. 4, 2024, through Feb. 3, 2026.
Individuals with a pending or approved TPS application may qualify for certain public benefits and REAL ID driver’s licenses and identification cards. When applying for a federal, state, or local government benefit, individuals will need to show a document proving they applied for or are beneficiaries of TPS for Haiti. They may provide a TPS EAD with a category code of A12 or C19, or a copy of their Form I-797, Notice of Action, for a current Form I-821, Application for Temporary Protected Status.
Given the time frames for processing TPS re-registration applications, USCIS has automatically extended through Aug. 3, 2025, the validity of EADs issued under the prior TPS designation of Haiti with a Card Expires date of:
- Aug. 3, 2024;
- June 30, 2024;
- Feb. 3, 2023;
- Dec. 31, 2022;
- Oct. 4, 2021;
- Jan. 4, 2021;
- Jan. 2, 2020;
- July 22, 2019;
- Jan. 22, 2018; or
- July 22, 2017.
TPS Haiti applicants or beneficiaries presenting an auto-extended EAD do not need to show any other document, such as a Form I-797 or I-797C, Notice of Action, to prove that they qualify for the EAD auto-extension.
SAVE will be able to verify an individual’s TPS or pending TPS application (and any employment authorization) using information from any documents noted above. In some instances, the benefit-granting agency may need to institute additional verification to do so.
To obtain an EAD that is valid after Aug. 3, 2025, holders of these EADs must re-register for TPS and file Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization, following the instructions in the Federal Register notice extending and redesignating Haiti for TPS until Feb. 3, 2026. If USCIS approves your newly filed Form I-765, USCIS will issue you an EAD valid through Feb. 3, 2026.
Please note this may be the final time USCIS will automatically extend Haiti TPS-based EADs with a Category of A-12 or C-19 and a Card Expires date of Dec. 31, 2022; Oct. 4, 2021; Jan. 4, 2021; Jan. 2, 2020; July 22, 2019; Jan. 22, 2018; or July 22, 2017.
