Change of Address Procedures for VAWA/T/U Cases and Form I-751 Abuse Waivers
To comply with confidentiality protections required by law, USCIS has special procedures in place if you previously filed or have a pending or approved benefit request as:
- A Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) self-petitioner;
- An applicant for T nonimmigrant status;
- A petitioner for U nonimmigrant status;
- An applicant who filed Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status, based on any of the above benefits;
- This includes VAWA self-petitioners and derivatives applying under the VAWA provisions of the Cuban Adjustment Act and the Haitian Refugee Relief Act.
- An applicant for employment authorization for Abused Nonimmigrant Spouse on Form I-765v; or
- An applicant for an abuse waiver filed on Form I-751, Petition to Remove Conditions on Residence.
Please follow the instructions below that apply to your particular case. We will consider the new mailing address that you provide to be a safe address to receive correspondence. You must explicitly request an address change for each form or application that you have pending.
If you have a pending or approved VAWA, T, or U-related case, you may call the USCIS Contact Center at 800-375-5283 (TTY: 800-767-1833) to request an address change. USCIS must verify your identity and confirm your eligibility to receive information before providing any information or other requested service. Before calling the USCIS Contact Center, you should have your receipt notice(s) available for the particular form(s) on which you would like to request an address change. You should also have a copy of the pending or approved application or petition that you are calling about readily available, if possible. If the USCIS Contact Center is unable to make the requested change, you may be scheduled for an in-person appointment at a USCIS field office.
Protected individuals may also send a secure message from their USCIS online account, and USCIS will call the person to complete the enhanced identity through the specialized verification process. Once a protected person’s identity has been verified through this process, the Contact Center can respond to the inquiry or provide assistance.
You can also continue to mail Form AR-11, Alien’s Change of Address Card (or a signed written notice) to the service center processing your case. If you submit your request via the mail, we strongly recommend using certified, registered, or return receipt mail. This will give you proof that you mailed the form (or signed request) to us.
Important Note: You should also use the information on this page to change your address if you have previously filed or currently have a pending or approved VAWA/T/U case, and you have a separate benefit request for which you need to change your address. For example, if you are applying for T nonimmigrant status and you also wish to change your address on a pending Temporary Protected Status (TPS) application, please use the procedures above to change your address for your TPS application.
If you have a pending, approved, or previously filed VAWA/T/U case, and you are represented on your case by an attorney or accredited representative, they may submit a signed Form AR-11 (or a signed written notice) on your behalf to the service center where your case is located. Your attorney or accredited representative should list all pending applications, petitions, or requests for which you would like to update your address in a cover letter. We will consider the new mailing address that you provide to be a safe address to receive correspondence.
